The Expansive Canvas: Large-Scale Form in the Music of 19th-Century Women Composers
The Expansive Canvas: Large-Scale Form in the Music of 19th-Century Women Composers
The Department of Music at Trinity College Dublin, the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and the Trinity Long Room Hub are delighted to announce the international conference and collaborative symposium, “The Expansive Canvas: Large-Scale Form in the Music of 19th-Century Women Composers” which will take place in Dublin, Ireland on 26–28 August 2025.
Further details at: https://expansivecanvas.com/
Large-scale form (LSF) refers to the structure of an extended musical composition found in numerous genres such as sonatas, symphonies, overtures (some with literary adjuncts), operas, concertos, chamber music and extended choral works. It stands in contrast to the domestic genres historically associated with women composers such as song and piano miniatures. For the purposes of this event, the long nineteenth century extends from 1789–1922. This international conference and collaborative symposium aims to reinvigorate our conception of music history, and to challenge entrenched patterns of representation within the classical music establishment by opening up a forum for the discussion, performance, and analysis of LSFs by women composers. With four central pillars in performance, music analysis, musicology, and music education, the event will provide a platform for a discourse on gender diversification in music education, and concert programming as it pertains to the music of the long nineteenth century.

Orff-Schulwerk Association Ireland Workshop 2024
-----------------------------------------------------------
Orff-Schulwerk Association Ireland (OSAI) is holding a workshop weekend on 16-17 November 2024 in the MG Laois / Laois School of Music premises. Our weekend last year with Soili Perkio was an enormous success and since then we have formed an Irish Orff Association and been recognised as members of the International Orff-Schulwerk Forum. We are really excited for this weekend and hope to see many Musician Educators, Primary Teachers and Arts Practitioners who are interested in using the Orff approach in their practice here in Ireland and further afield.
‘Tús Turais - a Schulwerk for Ireland’
Developing the Orff-Schulwerk approach for Ireland.
The launch of Orff-Schulwerk Association Ireland (OSAI) offers us a great opportunity to explore how we can reflect the breadth of Irish culture, both traditional and contemporary, in our music and movement education. Led on Saturday by Caroline McCluskey of the Scottish Orff-Schulwerk Association, we will explore how we can use traditional music, dance and culture to create and play with children and young people. On Sunday we will explore some of these aspects of Irish traditional culture with Aileen Lambert, Wexford folklorist who works with Heritage in Schools. The weekend will also include the first ever AGM of the Orff-Schulwerk Association of Ireland! Suitable for everyone who uses music, movement and culture in their creative work with children and young people in Ireland!

This one-day symposium gathers practitioners, researchers, and practice researchers working with children’s and youth choirs to explore how practice and scholarship can intersect on topics such as social responsibility, artistic citizenship, democracy, reflective practices, participatory practices, and decision-making. Throughout the day, presentations and discussions will focus on how these concepts can be considered in relation to the creation of choral music with young people.
In 2024, we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This symposium responds to this significant milestone by inviting music educators and musicians to gather and reflect on how their practices can both contribute to and support young people in creating a better world. This collaboration, between the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin City University, and Dublin Youth Choir, highlights how practice research and inter-disciplinary insights can enhance our understanding and support us in harnessing the transformative power of choral singing.
The event also marks the release of an album of repertoire for children’s and youth choirs by Dr Seán Doherty, performed by Dublin Youth Choir, entitled ‘We Must Create’. The symposium will culminate in the official launch of the recordings with a performance by Dublin Youth Choir, conducted by Dr Lynsey Callaghan.
