The SMEI operates a competitive scheme to award a limited number of grants to its members

As a member of SMEI, you are entitled to apply for a small grant for the following:

  • Individual presenting at an overseas conference

  • Performing group accepted to perform at an ISME conference or overseas conference

  • Student member selected to represent Ireland at EAS Student Forum

The SMEI awards a number of small grants to its members of up to €500 to performing groups invited to perform at ISME and €200 (max) in support of music education research at international conferences in music education. These grants aim to assist music groups, postgraduate research students, non-affiliated scholars, or academics without recourse to institutional funds.

To qualify for consideration, applicants (whether group or individual) must be a member of the Society for at least three months prior to application. Grants are payable on production of receipts.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Established performing groups who have been accepted to perform during an international music education conference

  • Post-graduate students, non-affiliated scholars and academics conducting research in music education without recourse to institutional funds 

Criteria for eligibility

  • The applicant must be an individual or group/institutional member of SMEI for at least three months prior to submitting the application

  • Funding is only available to those who have been successfully selected by peer-review to either present or perform at an international music education conference 

  • Applications should be received at least six weeks prior to the commencement of the conference

  • Applicants should demonstrate how they will acknowledge the support of SMEI and the efforts that will be made to promote the Society. All awardees will be required to include the SMEI logo on any presentations, handouts, promotional literature and/or concert programmes.

  • Applicants will agree to participate in publicity associated with the grant by SMEI (photos, project titles, online announcements/social media etc)

  • Individual recipients are encouraged to present their research at the annual SMEI conference or other seminars organised by SMEI. Performing groups may be asked to perform at an SMEI event.

How to apply

  • Applicants will submit a short CV/performance resumé together with the completed application form below:

  • a brief description of the proposed research (abstract or proposed performance programme) and its intended purpose/expected audience, venue details etc

  • (if applicable) an account of funding already received, or applied for, in connection with the project.

  • Written confirmation of acceptance by the review committee associated with the conference in question.

  • A letter of support from a supervisor or academic, where appropriate.

Awardees will be expected to: 

  • acknowledge, when presenting or publishing, the assistance of the SMEI

  • submit a short report on the work undertaken together with confirmation of attendance at the conference to the SMEI Grants Committee within 12 months of the allocation of the award.

Payment process:

To comply with Irish Revenue charitable status requirements recipients must submit all relevant receipts to the Treasurer before the payment of the full grant can be made.
